From a cosmopolitan perspective, every human being has multiple affiliations. A child born in the Netherlands to Moroccan parents does not need to choose either "Islam" or "Europe," despite what the likes of Geert Wilders claim. This article challenges the theoretical opposition between nationalism and cosmopolitanism with empirical research on the ways in which a group of ordinary Australians talked about multiculturalism in the 1980s and again in the 2000s. Panelists Michael Lind and Seyla Benhabib and moderator Samuel Moyn held a discussion on October 28, 2020. This cosmopolitanism is not necessarily postnational; or, it has strong interrelations with forms of nationalism, as suggested by Delanty (2006). But in my opinion, most of the war is due to the struggle between two different nationalism. Nationalism greatly helps to ensure that democracy and social justice are realized and sustained in the nation-state. Though seemingly mutually exclusive ideals, the two ought to be compatible since they are both valuable. 1.2.
